HPRU EZI Annual Conference Awards

On 13 December 2016 the NIHR HPRU in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (HPRU EZI) held its annual conference at the Liverpool Medical Institution. Over 115 people attended the event and the conference was well received by all.

The conference focused on 'Zika and Other Emerging Infections' with keynote talks from Dr Patricia Sequeira, Laboratório de Flavivírus, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, Brazil on ‘The FioCruz response to the Zika outbreak’ and Dr Alain Kohl, MRC Programme Leader, MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research on ‘Zika virus interactions with host cells’.

Delegates joined in the discussions on twitter via the #hpruezi2016.

Delegates were also given the opportunity to vote online for the ‘People’s Choice Award’ for best oral presentation. The winner was PhD student Liana Kafetzopoulou for her talk on ‘Metagenomic viral sequencing for non-targeted pathogen identification utilizing the MinION.’

Members of the HPRU EZI Scientific Advisory Board judged the best oral presentation, with first and runner up prizes, and best poster presentation, with first and runner up prizes.

Finally, Professor Tom Solomon said farewell to Adele Maggs, Project Manager for the HPRU EZI, as she moves onto new ventures as Centre Manager for the Leverhulme Centre for Functional Materials Design at the University of Liverpool.
